Feature Suggestions

We’re just getting started with Bookle, so let us know what you’d like to see!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Bookle no longer in development

With the release of iBooks for OS X, there's no point in continuing to work on Bookle. Thanks for the support and all your suggestions!

    • let us buy Bookle direct.

I refuse to use App Store-only software as I feel it cheats developers. You'd get the whole $9.99 vs only $7.99

      • Option to override publisher formatting

Currently, publishers can set their own styles in the book, and Bookle will prefer those over whatever font I have set. (For example, I have one that uses something like Helvetica or Arial, even though I have Bookle set to Georgia.) I'd like an option that, when turned on, overrides the publisher's choice of typeface, margins (the same book does not get 1.0.5's new margins), and line spacing.

        • Add support for managing (or at least reading from) the iTunes Books library.

Since it's already got all my epubs (unencrypted) and pdfs along with their metadata like current page / bookmarks (I assume because of the sync between my iPad and my iPhone) it would be a killer feature to utilize rather than creating a separate book library. Perhaps Bookle could support both libraries side by side for those whole like having multiple libraries. Thanks! Chris

          • Bookle as Preview for EPUB format in OS X

It would be awesome if Bookle (or BookleViewer) were to quickly preview a selected EPUB file in OS X. So, when a user browses a directory of EPUB files and selects a file, not only would the real cover be displayed (or whatever the first page would contain), but it would also be possible to flip pages.

            • Keep the width of the source list when resizing windows and toggling full screen

In most applications the width of source lists isn't proportional to the width of windows. The source list often becomes too wide after entering full screen.

              • Add context menus to the library section of the source list

I guess displaying the list of books on the source list is more or less a temporary measure, but in the meanwhile there could be context menu items for at least removing books and revealing them in the Application Support folder.

                  • Add vi editor-like navigation keys

Given the very simple navigation requirements while reading, how about using the vi movement keys for scrolling through the text while reading and navigating back and forth to the Library / Table of Contents panel and the book content display. So:

j - Scrolls down through book, either a line or page at a time
                    k - Scrolls up
h - Moves to the Library / TOC panel
l - Moves to the book content.

Granted that breaks the single keystroke search in the Library / TOC panel which may be popular (?), although I would think changing how the…

                    • Make it easier to remove books from library

I just had to do some cleanup of my Bookle library and only then did I realize how difficult it is to remove multiple items from the library. Please (1) add a way to do it with the keyboard, (2) a way to select and remove multiple items and possibly (3) a way to right-click with the mouse to remove one or more items.

                      • Hide Library and TOC

The TOC and especially the Library are clutter while reading.

Unlike iTunes, where choosing a new file every few minutes is the norm, a user will typically spend several hours on one file when reading. And jumping between chapters randomly is also not typical usage. (I believe users who do that are using reference books, and they wouldn't be doing that with Bookle because its lack of search makes it entirely unsuited to that purpose.)

It should be possible to hide the Library and TOC. There's as good as zero benefit to having them constantly visible, and they are distractions.

                        • Fullscreen mode like Byword/WriteRoom etc.

While the fullscreen mode in Bookle probably works just fine on a tiny MacBook Air screen, it's awful on a large monitor, with a wall of text 16" or more wide.

Bookle should take a leaf out of Byword's book and recognise that fullscreen is more about hiding the distraction of other apps than getting as much text onto the screen as possible.

The text should be ~800px wide, against a subdued background, and the library should be hidden. There's no reason to see the library while you're reading a book, anyway: it's just a distraction. And it's confusing because…

                          • Provide a Reader mode similar to Safari

Safari's distraction free "Reader" mode graying out the background and just providing a view of the content is very nice. Bookle could potentially do something similar (without switching to full screen mode, and preferably via a keyboard shortcut) where the right side display of the book content was focused for reading with everything else on the monitor grayed out in the background. Ideally that would work one monitor in a dual monitor configuration leaving the other monitor operating normally, or even optionally having the 2nd monitor grayed out for "fully" focused reading.

                            • Click and show file path in title bar

I am used to right-clicking or CMD-clicking the title bar to jump out to the folder that contains the ebook. It is a standard interface item but is missing in Bookle.

                                    • Default to show cover images proprtionally

The cover image for "Take Control of Bookle" looks great, and stays at a maximum fixed size even when I resize the screen.

All the epubs I have imported show the covers filing the screen space, and are stretched out of proportion. Please set a limit on that!

Very useful would be a annotation-option with sharing to the community (like #kindle) - oder syncing with read mill for "social reading" :-)
