Feature Suggestions

We’re just getting started with Bookle, so let us know what you’d like to see!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Search for text

I would like to be able to search for text with the book as a minimum. A global search across the whole library would also be useful as an option when trying to find all books that contain the search word or phrase.

    • Create a full-featured library interface

The list of titles in Bookle is currently static; all you can do is add and delete them. In a future version, we're envisioning an interface more like iTunes, where there are multiple columns displaying the various metadata for each book: title, author, date added, size, and so on. You'd be able to sort the list by any of the columns, which would help with much larger libraries.

      • Make it possible to create and edit personal annotations

You're reading along in a Take Control book and you see something you want to try, but it's not a good time. With this feature you'd be able to leave yourself a note, attached to a particular position in the book or some selected text, and then return to that note later on. This is likely non-trivial to design and implement, since there would have to be some interface for listing and finding notes as well, along with creating, editing, and removing them.

        • Sync a Bookle library between multiple Macs

It would be nice to be able to sync Bookle's library between multiple Macs, so the user doesn't have to add books to multiple copies of Bookle manually.

          • Cloud Storage!

            Hi,

I would like to store my books in the cloud Dropbox, Box.net etc..., view them in searchable Bookshelf and list modes ala Delicious Library and iBooks and be able to download them one at a time.

            • Bookmarks would be nice to track where I left off in reading.

Similar to my Kindle. Actually on the Kindle, when I close a book, it re-opens to where I was when I left.

              • Allow people to change the text color

For those who prefer light text on a dark background, it would be nice to make it so Bookle can change text color as well as background color.

                • Add an interface for finding and downloading EPUBs from within Bookle

Since EPUBs are basically HTML and being view with WebKit, perhaps Bookle could implement a very simple Web browser that would display sites that make EPUBs available for download. Downloading an EPUB from within Bookle would add it directly to the library.

                  • Sort the library ignoring "A", "An", "The" etc.

So that "A Painted House" is sorted as "Painted House". You get the idea...

                    • Add support for PDF files

Although PDF is a very different format from EPUB, a sufficient number of ebooks are available in PDF format that it might be nice to be able to collect and read them in Bookle as well. Most of the reading and navigation controls would be the same, though there would likely be differences with display, since PDF is a fixed-layout format.

                      • Add some alignment choices.

Usually, these readers allow for a choice of left or right aligned, or centered, instead of only justified to both sides. At the very least, add left alignment. Having an uneven right margin may not look as good, but it helps a reader keep track of which line they're on.

                        • Make the text display page oriented, like a book (iBook and Stanza do this).

Rather than putting an entire chapter into the text object, display only one page of text, so that there is no scroll bar. Spacebar or Page Down will display the next page, Shift-Spacebar or Page Up will display the previous page. Allow swiping to change the page rather than change the chapter. Perhaps swipe up or swipe down can change the chapter.

Currently the way things are, the last line of visible text might be only partially shown. When you display an entire page, don't allow for partially displayed lines in the last line of visible text.

                          • Improve import

The first thing I tried to do with Bookle was to drag 28 ePubs to the Library list in the Bookle window. This fails on 2 counts:
                            - dragging to the library, expected functionality, does not work, instead you have to find a Bookle icon and drag to that; and dragging to the coverflow version of the icon doesn't work either.
                            - Dragging multiple ePubs results in only one being imported.

                            • Allow a 2- or n-page-wide viewing mode

that would flow text from one pane to the next on its right instead of making each chapter one scrollable pane. This is particularly useful for reference works (such as Take Control and O'Reilly pubs) when there are operations and/or code that you would like to keep on screen with their descriptions. It would also help maintain shorter lines for readability in full screen mode.

                              • Display how much of a book I have read / actioned

I'd like to see how much of a book I have read. Example implementation - a check box for each line item in the TOC, which the user checks after reading, and then a linear display representing what has been read / not read in the book. This would be useful when studying a subject. For books which have exercises or tutorials, it would also be useful to have a second set of markings to record whether you have "actioned" the section as well as reading it.

                                • Hide Library and TOC

The TOC and especially the Library are clutter while reading.

Unlike iTunes, where choosing a new file every few minutes is the norm, a user will typically spend several hours on one file when reading. And jumping between chapters randomly is also not typical usage. (I believe users who do that are using reference books, and they wouldn't be doing that with Bookle because its lack of search makes it entirely unsuited to that purpose.)

It should be possible to hide the Library and TOC. There's as good as zero benefit to having them constantly visible, and they are distractions.

                                  • Add support for the .ibooks format created by iBooks Author

Apple's new iBooks Author program creates its document in a special .ibooks format that is essentially mangled (it doesn't validate) EPUB. Right now, Bookle can't display those files, but it might be possible to parse through the non-standard bits such that it could. How the interaction would work with interactive elements, I can't really say at this point, but if people are interested in this feature, we can put more effort into investigating what might be possible.

                                    • calibre integration or plugin

I use calibre to integrate my ebooks, all formats (I don't always remember if it is a NookBook, a Kindle, or an epub from Baen or O'Reilly). I COULD do it now, but it appears to make YET ANOTHER COPY of the book. I already have one copy of iTunes and another in calibre

                                        • Improve experience with Apple's built-in VoiceOver screen reader

It would be greatly appreciated if Bookle were made somewhat more accessible with Apple's built-in screen reader, VoiceOver. In particular, the current library interface is complicated and not as intuitive to use as it should be. Cursor tracking, which is Voiceover's default behavior, seems to cause no end of confusion when navigating.
