Feature Suggestions

We’re just getting started with Bookle, so let us know what you’d like to see!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Don't restrict display to the contents of the table of contents

I'm in the process of preparing an ebook for publication, and I wanted something to be able to review the ebook on the Mac without having to always transfer the book to the iPad or iPhone.

Bookle comes really close to what I need, but misses because I have a page that I don't want to have in the table of contents (at all), but is in fact the starting page of the book (a dedication page) when it is opened. iBooks handles this properly; Bookle does not.

    • RSS Feed Subscriptions

I receive some ePubs periodicals via RSS Feeds (into iTunes, synced to iPad). I'd like to 'automate' these into Bookle via RSS Feed subscription support. Thanks!

      • Add a filter to the library list

A minimal filter to find a title or author in the library list. Right now, the only way to check to see if you have already added a title is to scroll down the list.

          • metadata lookup

Add a way to look up metadata on a given title, and to add that information to your book. Perhaps through Google books or Amazon, or even the Library of Congress. It would allow a lot more options for sorting.

            • Make a build for Mac OS 10.5 Leopard and Universal binary

I am not the only TidBITS reader with legacy machines... I am hoping that WebKit on Leopard has enough of the same APIs that you could just build your existing code to the older platform.

              • Make it possible to create and edit personal annotations

You're reading along in a Take Control book and you see something you want to try, but it's not a good time. With this feature you'd be able to leave yourself a note, attached to a particular position in the book or some selected text, and then return to that note later on. This is likely non-trivial to design and implement, since there would have to be some interface for listing and finding notes as well, along with creating, editing, and removing them.

                • Add support for PDF files

Although PDF is a very different format from EPUB, a sufficient number of ebooks are available in PDF format that it might be nice to be able to collect and read them in Bookle as well. Most of the reading and navigation controls would be the same, though there would likely be differences with display, since PDF is a fixed-layout format.

                  • Add the capability to look up selected words in the dictionary.

As I envision it, this would key off what I believe is the built-in feature in Lion to look up a selected word by Control/right-clicking it and choosing Look Up from the contextual menu. I would guess that it's not too hard to implement, but I also can't imagine that it's all that useful - do people really look up words that often?

                    • Add support for DRM-free Mobipocket files

I don't know how prevalent ebooks in this format are, since most books aimed at the Kindle are sold by Amazon and are DRM-encumbered. But it's an HTML-based format, so it should be possible to decode and display DRM-free ebooks in Mobipocket format (.mobi file extension).

                      • Bookle no longer in development

With the release of iBooks for OS X, there's no point in continuing to work on Bookle. Thanks for the support and all your suggestions!
